This year has denied us many things. Holidays, schooling and general freedom, to name a few. But one that resonates most with me is touch. A handshake with new acquaintances, a hug with old friends. Spontaneous high fives, congratulatory fist pumps, consoling arm strokes. With all the uncertainty that COVID has brought to our lives, we can no longer take comfort in human touch.

So many of us are missing touch in our lives. There are physiological reasons why touch makes us feel good, alleviating symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. Arguably, the ultimate in touch is a massage – you can never underestimate the power a good therapeutic massage can have on our body, especially in these uncertain times. Thankfully, the beauty industry is allowed to offer massage and at Zen we’ve never been busier with these appointments.

Massage is often dismissed as a luxury or “nice to have” but it’s so much more than aromatherapy oils in a candlelit room – it’s a non-invasive and complementary approach to wellness, carried out by specially trained therapists, to help the body’s ability to heal itself. Then there is the therapeutic effect it has on our minds.

You see, human touch triggers the release of happy hormones including oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine. It also lowers cortisol. A massage can therefore help reduce anxiety, stress and sleep problems. It’s also good for digestive disorders, headaches and lymph system stimulation. And, of course, there’s the physical benefit on the joints and soft tissue.

Our Zen Custom Massage, a truly bespoke massage experience using customised massage techniques and Elemis oils to achieve the state of body and mind desired, is still available. For serious relaxation, our Hot Stone Massage is hard to beat as it is also calms state of mind.

I’m a firm believer that regular massage can be transformational on both body and mind. And, until we can all enjoy the power of touch – without restrictions – again, this is one worthwhile investment.
